The Buffalo Public Schools - and the Buffalo Board of Education in particular - have been the center of debate for years. Despite the critical role the public school system plays in Buffalo's long-term health, voter turnout for school board elections is typically underwhelming. Indeed, less than 5% of registered voters generally vote in school board elections. That's unacceptable and we need more candidates to provide more choices and get more voters interested in helping the school system improve.
If you are interested in getting involved, a great place to start is by voting in the upcoming May 4th school board election. Remember, the Board of Education is the policy-making body for all of the City's public schools. For more information on the School Board Election, please visit the Erie County Board of Elections page online.
If you live and vote in the North district, one choice you have is Jay McCarthy. Jay is well-known for his participation in the creation of the Barkyard, Buffalo's first and only off-leash area for dog owners. Jay is a long-time resident of Buffalo, he's active in the community and is dedicated to making Buffalo a better place to live.
Jay will be holding a fundraiser this evening and asked Buffalo Rising to pass along the following statement:
Dear Friends,
As many of you know, I am running for Buffalo School Board. No where does our great city need more help than in our schools. I cannot do this alone; I need your help. Join me at my fundraiser tonight, March 25th, at The Wine Thief from 4:30-7:30 and support me in my effort to make Buffalo a better place with a brighter future.
Jay McCarthy
