The Eulogy For Pick No. 11: Maybin Waived on August 15th, 2011

The Buffalo Bills have waved and waived goodbye to Aaron “The Defensive Wes Craven” Maybin, a player the last regime deemed an appropriate selection for the No. 11 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

How bad of a selection was Maybin? Well, he didn’t hit any pedestrians, but aside from that feather there isn’t much in his cap besides hair art. The player talked the part of a football player, looked the part of a football player and well, he actually looked the part of a cast member of “300.” He also actually contributed in his community and didn’t fail for lack of effort, for what it’s worth, a criticism heaped on many busts.

But my was he a terrible defensive football player. He made just 24 tackles in his 26 games with the Bills, and pretty much spit goose-eggs into every column of his career stats. Of those 24 tackles, how many were assists given after an enthusiastic Donte Whitner-like back dive onto a pile of tacklers?

Could he be the worst first-round pick in Buffalo Bills history? Consider:

– Erik Flowers has been vilified for his lack of production in two years after being the No. 26 overall pick in 2000, but he scraped together four sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and two more tackles.

– John McCargo may not be Percy Snow, but he also had 2.5 sacks in his sophomore season to go with 29 tackles. He also, to my knowledge, was never pancaked by Marion Barber.

– There’s an argument to be made for Mike Williams, but at least he was forced out of the starting line-up by Jason Peters and was seen as a viable enough project that the Bills tried him at both tackles, guard and even a little defensive lineman.

– 1982′s first round pick, Perry Tuttle, only made it two years as a Bills wide-out but did have three touchdowns as a second-year man.

Any stats beyond 1980 are very hard to justify, so here comes the big question. Within the last 31 years, who was the worst Bills first-round pick: Williams or Maybin? What stings the most is how much better off the Bills could’ve been with Bryant McKinnie, the other OT rated in 2002, or Brian Orakpo, the other DE/OLB rated highly in 2009. Heck, look at the other defensive names skipped over at No. 11: Rey Maualuga, Clay Matthews Jr. and Brian Cushing of USC. Hindsight being 20/20, a bunch of us would’ve signed up for the added stress of another quarterback in Josh Freeman.

A final nail: Maybin was the 11th pick in the draft and first defensive end. The 11th defensive end taken was Matt Shaughnessy. He’s played in all 32 games for Oakland with 82 tackles and 11 sacks.

Where’s Lloyd? Blowing Up the Food Network, That’s Where. on August 15th, 2011

The Food Network is holding a contest called The Great Food Truck Race where people from around the country vote for their favorite food truck. Well, Buffalonians love two things - Lloyd the taco truck and voting in online contests. So it should come as as no surprise that little lovable Lloyd is currently ranked #1 in the country. That's right, just 13 months after first turning the key in the ignition, Lloyd is currently ranked America's favorite food truck.

They've overcome a blown engine. They've overcome a do-nothing Common Council that has refused to move forward on legislation giving food trucks the ability to actually move around the city. It's the little taco truck that could.

But this Food Network contest is not over. So don't just sit around and bask in the glow of seeing Buffalo's very own taco truck dominating every other food truck in America.  Voting continues until September 12, 2011 so we have to keep it up. You can vote up to 10 times a day online or, if you prefer, you can simply text FT182 to 66789.

ECIDA Approves Incentives for Ellicott Street Restaurant Projects on August 15th, 2011

The Erie County Industrial Development Agency approved a request from developer Rocco Termini for a total of $131,000 in tax abatements for two downtown restaurant projects.

Termini plans to convert the Golden Swan Café and Grille, at 437 Ellicott St., to an affordable Italian, family-style eatery.  The building is just south of Termini's Ellicott Lofts, Ellicott Commons and IS Lofts projects.

The former Horton Coffee Co. building, at 338 Ellicott St., will be renovated into a reasonably-priced family restaurant.  Termini purchased the site last Thursday paying $70,000 for the one-story building.  Crews were gutting the property on Friday.

In both projects, Termini who has completed several successful downtown housing projects and added other retail and restaurant sites to Ellicott Street, is partnering with restaurant veterans. Sarah Ketry, daughter of Pearl Street Brewery & Grill owner, Earl Ketry, and high-profile local chef and restaurant owner Mike Andrzejwski, are teaming with Termini to bring the idle sites back to life as eateries.

Investment in the two restaurants will total $800,000 and create 10 full-time jobs when they are up and running.
