A letter to the senators in the great state of New York on June 23rd, 2011

This is a general note about the marriage equality bill currently bouncing from conference to conference in the NY Senate today. This is not about the specifics of the bill, nor do I plan on wasting your time rehashing everything you’ve heard from everyone regarding the fairness of said bill. I am writing this as an attempt to relieve the pressure that is building in my little gay brain. I have been engaged since early 2010, but was willing, ready and able to have my marriage performed elsewhere, and be one of the lucky few homos who lived in a state that would at least acknowledge my union (do I even need to mention that NYS not only recognizes gay marriages, but will offer a gay divorce to a couple who got gay married elsewhere? What does that do to your “sanctity of marriage” argument? ) Do you see what was happening there, NYS Senate? Up until a week ago you had a boisterous, loud/foul-mouthed dyke tamed into submission, ready to drop to my knees and accept the few liberties you were nice enough to grant me. To be THANKFUL for them, even. Then you had to start dangling the carrot, you had to use BASIC CIVIL RIGHTS as a bartering chip for the money hungry on the right. Is that what YOUR Jesus would do? (I capitalized Jesus for YOU, not me. That was me being thoughtful about YOUR feelings, you are welcome) you bathe yourself in religious self righteousness, while simultaneously manipulating a democracy to make sure that the most money ends up in the fewest pockets. Is THAT what YOUR Jesus would do? To add insult to injury, you allow matters that you have lazily put off until the end of the session (sweet corn, tight rope walking across the Niagara gorge) to become matters of GREAT importance at this final hour. I understand the Senate is a busy place, with all the tweeting dicks and flirting with SUNY Albany interns, but don’t you think you could have found a better time to pass a bill prohibiting barber’s from selling alcohol to minors? As a matter of fact, are barbers excluded from the existing laws prohibiting ANYONE from selling booze to minors?

Is there an epidemic of old Italian/African American men getting off the hook with -“no no officer, you don’t understand, I’m a BARBER”

***side note: wine drinking was common in Jesus’ time, even with teenagers, so THIS in fact, IS something Jesus Would do***

Back to the Corn, be more specific next time would you? When picking our state vegetable, lets pick something that doesn’t moonlight as a grain, k? Nebraska is laughing at us right now. You do know that, don’t you? NEBRASKA! AND let’s pick something we grow more of than anyone else too, or even ALMOST as much as other states. Not just the thing Long Island housewives really look forward to grilling when they go to the Hamptons. NYS does not even qualify as a top “minor corn crop area”. We aren’t even AAA in corn production. Actually, we aren’t even AA. We are not Division 3. Our corn producing barely makes it onto corn producing MAPS.

Maps specifically intended to show corn production. It’s not like I’m asking us to be the BEST at corn producing, but we aren’t even AVERAGE at it. Back to what matters. Dear Senators, there are people at the other end of this. Even by your standards, unless you have passed a bill making me 1/3 of a human or something similar. Children, grandchildren, sisters, aunts, uncles, college co-eds, grandparents and parents- All human beings, waiting to be treated as such .You are treating us like sub-humans, like animals. Like we don’t have a vote, like we are lower class citizens who aren’t worth your time. Worse than animals, actually. If you caged a dog and then dangled a piece of steak in front of him for a week- A piece of steak he couldn’t access without your fat little thumbs unlocking the gate door, that would be considered animal neglect at the very least, more than likely cruel and unusual punishment. PETA would be beating down your door.

You have a chance to cement the future of NYS as a leader in this country. We are not leaders right now, we are being dragged around by corporations and whatever religious organization has money left to spend on hate. Since many have pointed to the possible consequences of religious organizations denying a couple marriage-when has the church been unable to do that? The Catholic Church has been refusing marriage for a multitude of reasons (no communion, divorce) since its inception. What makes them think THIS would open them up to litigation? And since you brought it up, shouldn’t you be telling them to take that money and spend it on helping people, not hating them?

In closing, I would like to take this moment to say, on behalf of all my gay folks, even the boys who run in fear of the idea of marriage. I encourage you all to add your own words in the comment section. It feels really good.

FUCK YOU NY SENATE. FUCK YOU. Fuck you for debating whether or not I am a human being in front of the world, fuck you for your hypocracy- judging what I do in my bedroom when you whip your dick out any chance you get. FUCK you for believing you are the be all and end all in a society that is falling to shit. FUCK you for Matthew Shepard and every gay youth that has lost their life, because when you sit in your conferences ‘debating’ our worth, you tell a nation that I/We are less than human. FUCK you for encouraging assaults/abuse. FUCK YOU for using my life to make gains for YOUR cause. FUCK you for taking the constitution and blowing your wad of greed right into Lady Liberty’s eye. That’s YOUR money shot, isn’t it? FUCK YOU for treating this like an episode of American idol, minus the handsome host plus some bald ones. FUCK you for forgetting that long ago a bunch of fellows sat in a room and put the words ‘separation of church and state ‘ on a document because they had just hopped an ocean to avoid people like you. Just FUCK YOU.

Registration Spikes @ Stiletto Run on June 23rd, 2011

All total, there were an additional 200 runners (over last year) who came out to register for this year's Stiletto Run, bringing the number of runners to an impressive total of 500. Not only did the quantity of racers grow in size, so did the number of events coinciding with the race. For the first time, there was beer provided by Blue Monk, as well as food served up by Magnolia Events. There was a DJ blasting out music on the street in front of Solé, while the band The Afterburners played on top of a porch further down towards Lafayette. Even the folks at Dolci opened their doors (see BRO story) for the day to sell some gelato and cookies - it shouldn't be long before they are open daily. As for the race...

Winners of this year's run were:

First Place Women's: Nicole Benoit (photo)
Second Place Women's: Dawn Ross (photo)
First Place Men's: Dan Gigante* (photo)
Best Shoes: Katie Done

*For those of you who attended last year's run, you may recall that Dan Gigante was the runner who broke a heal as he approached the finish line (see post). This year he not only purchased better shoes, he figured out that 'slow and steady' wins the race. He paced himself and then dug his heels in as he neared the finish line.
