Why a radio revolution matters… on February 17th, 2011

(WECK 1230) — I disagree with Brad Riter.

Yes, he is my boss. Yes, he is my friend. Yes, he played a pivotal role in convincing WECK to hire me away from my former employer.

But — darn it, Brad — I believe Tim Tebow is going to be a fine NFL quarterback.

As for a radio revolution? Sure, I’m game, but we’ve been fighting it for three years. We just have a new general in place and he’s a lot louder. I guess in this fight, I’m some sort of Benedict Arnold because I’ve been on the other side for most of it.

What does it mean to operate as an independent radio station? It doesn’t mean $#!+ if you don’t represent a preferable alternative, which I believe we endeavor to be every single day. This isn’t to say we’re an unstoppable force or that my show hasn’t had its fair share of mistakes, but in the words of Samuel Beckett, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

There are a lot of folks doing radio who are good for — and care about — Buffalo. They work at all sorts of stations. Howard Simon, Chris Parker and Jeremy White are guys I wouldn’t hesitate to phone for advice. Rich Gaenzler over at the Bills Radio Network does a killer job, as does Murph. Josh Potter and Jim Kurdziel at The Edge have been good friends for a guy to have. The list goes on.

But to take away from what a commercially-viable independent radio station could mean for Buffalo would be silly. When it comes to my radio interests, they tend to be either sports talk or occasional political talk, but those are my faults. What if Buffalo radio was representative of what discussion should be: some civic, some sports, some general tomfoolery?

When I started at WECK, I admittedly questioned the philosophy. As time has gone on, I’ve realized what’s great for the area in a truly representative swath. Let’s stop pigeon-holing ourselves as 100 percent of one interest for 24 hours out of the day. Let’s admit we go to CD players or mp3 connections more often than hoping for a good song on the dial. Let’s stop pretending we’re all extremists on the left or right of normal.

So that’s what I love about WECK, even when I’m not listening. We have righties, lefties, financial guys, musicians, teachers, activists, journalists, Dems, Reps, Tea Partyers, whites, blacks and Native Americans. At any given moment, two folks who seemingly get along could begin a spirited debate.

I can remember being surprised when my second week on the job featured me covering the President’s visit to Buffalo during live coverage when other stations leaned in a different direction. I remember Carl Paladino spending an hour with Bill O’Loughlin despite the fact that our afternoon show was more than a little critical of him.

Having commercial radio stations is certainly a status point for an area, but that doesn’t demand your Nos. 1 & 2 spot on your radio dial. It’s in a similar vein to folks getting jazzed when a new chain restaurant comes to town. Your cousin from Syracuse may want to go to the Olive Garden, but aren’t you more proud of Chef’s, Santasiero’s, or your preferred Queen City eatery? Do folks come here for Domino’s Hot Wings or one of our traditional mainstays?

I will say I hate the term “war” here, so I do disagree with Brad on another thing (He also thinks Buffalo State should abbreviate it with one ‘f’ while I’m a ‘Buff’ guy). Competition should make us all better, and I believe that in short order you will see our “side” as a preferable option to our opponents.

If it serves to make Buffalo better in some way — via our best efforts or others’ improvement — that’s exceptional stuff in the truest sense of the adjective.

I can promise that.

Love is a battlefield.

I’m glad to say I have a stake in whether or not the ideal of WECK can come into fruition. I loved a lot of my time at WGR and certainly check in with my old pals. So, naw, I’m not putting on warpaint, but I’m going to continue competing like a madman. When we succeed, it’ll be a great moment and serve as motivation to keep improving.

And if we fail, we’ll try again, and fail better.
